I avoided balloon sleeves all summer last year because one wedding dress from 2019 made me look like I was about to do the weather forecast. The proportions were off, the fabric wasn’t right, it just ballooned up in a way that had nothing to do with the sleeve shape and everything to do with me picking a rubbish dress.
And to that dress, years too late: it wasn’t you, it was the polyester.
Because when a balloon sleeve is done right it’s one of the most flattering things you can wear on your arms. I’m not saying that to hype it up, either – a good balloon sleeve is glorious. It all comes down to volume with purpose. It should billow at the cuff, but hold its shape rather than going stiff, and it should finish somewhere that actually complements the length of your arm, rather than just where the pattern cutter stopped paying attention.
Light cotton and good crepe fabric do this particularly well. Avoid anything too synthetic because that will make the sleeve look blown up rather than sculpted, and you’ll instantly look costumey rather than cutting-edge.
Look-wise, the sleeve is working hard enough for you that the rest of the dress can be fairly simple. A defined waist is key to stop the whole thing looking like one big poofy shape – believe me, it makes more of a difference than you’d think. A pair of ankle boots and bare legs is instant daywear, which we basically want from every dress in our wardrobe. My colleague Priya calls it my “school run but make it statement” look, which is honestly accurate. Heeled sandals and a decent bag pushes it into night time nicely without trying too hard.
If you’re planning on layering a jacket on top, make sure it’s a cropped one. There’s no reason to cover up the sleeve under jacket fabric – you bought a balloon sleeve dress so show it off! As for when to wear this pretty downstairs darling, think anywhere that gives you a chance to shine. Long lunches, weddings where you want to look great but aren’t in the wedding party, work parties with drinks at the bar. It’ll also look great on an aeroplane oddly enough; it photographs really well from far away. Sounds silly, but if you’re the kind of person who gets photos taken at events then that’s genuinely useful info. It’s less great if you know you’ll be sat at a desk cubicle all day poking things at the office, as the sleeve does take up some elbow room.
Done right this shape is one of the most useful flashes of skin you can have. Done wrong you’ll look like you work at a weather station. I speak from experience.
