I judged beige harshly for many years. Got it filed away as “safe” and “a bit nothing”, the colour you wear when you can’t be fucked having an opinion on what you’re wearing. It was very much a failure of imagination on my part rather than judgment on the colour itself. An oversized beige jumper that’s actually well made is one of the most flattering pieces you can wear. Because the colour is so close to skin tone it stops reading as a clothing choice and starts reading as just… you. Warm, bundled up and put together without any discernible effort.
It’s all down to that first word though – beige. Not the shape. You can actually take any silhouette, throw it in beige and it’ll look good if you’ve done the others steps I’m about to tell you. But there’s a whole spectrum that lives under that umbrella term – oatmeal, camel, stone, biscuit. Find the wrong one against the wrong skin and it can look grey and washed out, like you’ve just stepped off the hospital corridor.
Find the right one though and it glows. So when you’re faced with an ugly pile of beige jumper options in retail land, look properly at the undertone before you decide it’s boring and walk away. Nine times out of ten it isn’t boring, it’s just been matched poorly to you.
The fabric also matters more than it usually would. Because an oversized jumper only looks intentional if the knit has a bit of structure to it. Heavy cotton, or a proper wool will hold its shape and throw off your shoulders like it’s supposed to. A thin, cheap knit will just look like a borrowed garment three sizes too big for you.
Styling wise it wants contrast to stop it reading flat. Tuck the front half into a high waisted trouser or a skirt so it looks like a coherent proportions choice rather than accidental dumping. Roll up those sleeves. Throw on a boot, a leather bag, gold jewellery, anything that breaks up the softness with a bit of shine or structure. Throw a shirt collar under it and you’ve stopped lazy jumper territory and you’re looking at a full outfit.
It works for Sunday supermarket runs and lunches you made an effort for, travel days and offices where nobody cares you’re basically wearing a blanket as long as you mean to wear that blanket. That’s beauty of a good beige jumper. You look like you put minimum effort in, when you actually took the most care of anything.
