I used to think beige gilets were exclusively for men who owned Labradors and lived within walking distance of a boot sale. Then my work mate Priya rocked up to a Tuesday meeting wearing one, tucked into a plain white shirt, and looked ten shades more put together than anyone else in the office, and I found myself awkwardly sitting there, silently dismantling my entire worldview on jumpers I’d created circa 2016.
Beige gilets. I was wrong. About those.
The thing with beige gilets is that fill and cut are everything. Skimp on either and it falls apart literately the moment you sit down. Too bulky and you’ll look like you’re about to pop into space. You want something with enough body to retain its shape after a day of swinging around on your back with coats being put on and taken off haphazardly, bags bumping into it, etc., and still look like a beige gilet at 6pm, and not a sad deflated memory of one.
As for how you wear them? Less convoluted than the press makes out. Over a sweater for the school run/office. Over a shirt when you want to look like you have your shit slightly more together than you actually do. Or my favourite; over a slip dress in that limbo period where it’s technically warm but lying to you like hell.
Speaking of colour; beige goes with everything. Navy, khaki, black, cream, all the faded denims in your wardrobe. It’s mellows them out. I used to always reach for black gilets thinking they were smarter. They’re not. Black just blends into everything you wear. Beige lifts your whole outfit rather than lurking there unnoticed. Bonus points.
Where they shine though is for those in between moments. The dog walk that involves coffee, the train station, the school run, that embarrassing lunch where no one is quite sure if smart dressing is required. It’s comfort with zero fuss, and covers you for all eventualities. Get a good one and you’ll wonder how you lived without it.
