Beige is written off as dull until you try one on with real heat beating down on you and realise it’s doing harder practical work than half the other brighter sundresses on the rail. But it’s the tiered shape making it work, not just the colour. It needs enough drop on each tier for it to move when you walk rather than hang stiffly, but with enough volume that it skims when it catches your skin rather than cling once you’ve jumped in the sea and dried off in the sun. Cheap versions are thin and papery and stick to your damp skin in unflattering ways no matter who you are. The right ones have a cotton/linen blend with a little weight that holds its shape and doesn’t hike up when there’s even a slight breeze, which there always is on a beach somewhere.
The colour beige does something specific too.
It photographs warm against dark tan or pale skin, it doesn’t clash with a sunburn like coral or red do, and it matches everything you’ll pack for a week away, gold jewellery, tan sandals, a straw bag, even chucking on a battered denim jacket for the walk back from dinner.
Honestly, you’re not even trying to make a statement with beige, you’re letting the shape and the tiers do all the visual effort while the beige just makes the whole thing breathe.
It’s where it shines though – see what I did there – is in the in-between moments just as much as the obvious ones. Flung over your bikini as you walk to a beach bar it looks intentional rather than like you threw your bathing suit cover up at the air.
Pop sandals with a heel on and a decent bag and it’s good enough to jump from beach to dinner without changing, which is far more important than people care to admit when you’re trying to relax on holiday and not spend all your time unpacking and repacking a suitcase full of outfits. It also can withstand getting wrecked by the actual act of being on a beach; sand, sun cream, sitting on a sun lounger for four hours better than anything fitted or too ‘nice’ ever will. That’s the test. How it looks after living in it for a day, not how it looks hanging in the dry clean only section of your wardrobe.
