I wore three winters thinking belted coats were tricked up. They were coats with cropped sleeves and an optional extra bit of material to drag around your leg in a taxi. Then I learnt how to knot one. At my waist. Intentionally. As opposed to letting it rest open like I’d put it on whilst sprinting for the Tube, and it made sense. A belted coat isn’t a coat that needs solving. It’s coat that knows shape is currency.
What I love about one that fits is that it does the compromising for you. You get the fullness, the swoop, the cosy Gus fantasy of being engulfed in fabric, but it’s cinched in by a belt that saves you from drowning in a sweater with arms.
That’s the difference between coat nerded out and coat burrito-ed. Get one that actually stays om its shoulders and collar and doesn’t slump down when you sit, and make sure the belt has substance not some paranoid skinny tie that falls itself open on the Angel tube escalator; two, definitely two, times mine has. In front of a guy. Who was looking.
Honestly, once you get your head out of the belts, styling one is a doddle. Cinch it at your waist – not around your hips like a bathrobe – and suddenly whatever you’re wearing underneath hardly matters. Jeans and ankle boots, a slip dress, a wrinkled suit you forgot to press; it all looks intentional because your coat is doing the work for you.
Leave it open over a suit for day time and it looks intentional vs thrown together. Belt it all the way up post 6pm and it does that magical thing where you look like you made an effort but no one can prove it.
As for when, this is your coat for every in between. A Dinner that you can’t quite tell if there’s coat check at. The half mile walk between a wedding ceremony and reception while everyone stands around in the carpark feeling like ice cubes. Any day that you’re commuting to an event and plan on going straight out when you land. It just works up or down without you having to change much underneath. It’s not a coat to hide in. It’s a coat to arrive in, belt knotted, pride intact.
