I used to think a mini bag was a scam. A little black pouch that fits a phone, a card and absolutely nothing else, sold to women who apparently don’t carry keys or lip balm or three receipts they’ll never look at again. I held that opinion for years, actually years, right up until my colleague Priya turned up to a leaving do with one the size of a satsuma and somehow produced a plaster, mints and a spare hair tie from it like a magician. I went and bought one that weekend and I owe that bag an apology.
What makes a good black mini bag isn’t size, it’s structure. A proper one holds its shape when it’s half empty, has a strap that sits right whether you’re wearing it crossbody or off one shoulder, and doesn’t scuff the second it meets a table leg.
Hardware matters more than people admit, a clasp that clicks properly feels expensive even when the bag wasn’t, and a strap you can shorten or lengthen changes how it wears completely, from a going out bag at nine to a “I need both hands free” bag by midnight.
Styling one is the easy part, which is exactly why I own more than is reasonable. It cuts a plain outfit in half in the best way, jeans and a good coat look finished the second one’s slung across the body. It sits nicely against a slip dress without fighting the fabric.
It’s the one accessory that doesn’t argue with anything else you’re wearing, gold jewellery, silver jewellery, patterned tights, it doesn’t care.
Occasion wise, this is the dinner bag, the one wedding guest keeps texting about, the bag for the evening that starts at a restaurant and ends somewhere you didn’t plan to be. It’s not for the school run, obviously, and it’s not for anyone who needs a laptop, a water bottle and a change of shoes. But for the version of a night where all you actually need is a card, your phone and a lipstick you’ll reapply once in the loo, nothing else does the job half as well.
