I said for years that polka dots were a novelty print, the sort of thing that belongs on a tea towel rather than a dress. I was wrong, and I’m addressing that opinion directly now because it cost me a good decade of avoiding a print that, done properly, is one of the most flattering things a woman can put on her body.
The blue polka dot dress works because the dot does something stripes and florals can’t, it reads as pattern from across the room and as texture up close, so it never looks as loud as it should. A navy background with a scattered white dot is the version that earns its keep, it behaves almost like a plain dress in low light and then reveals itself properly the moment someone gets close enough to notice. The dot size matters more than anyone tells you. Go too large and you’re in fancy dress territory, go too small and it just looks like static from a distance, which happened to a dress I owned in 2019 that my colleague Priya once described as “a dress having a bad signal.”
Fabric weight is the other thing worth caring about.
A polka dot in a fluid viscose or a proper cotton moves and creases the way an actual dress should, whereas the stiffer synthetic versions can sit away from the body like a lampshade. I found this out at a wedding when a cheap one held its shape so aggressively in the wind that it stayed exactly where it was while I did not.
Styling one is genuinely easy once you stop overthinking the print. Tan or white sandals in summer, a denim jacket thrown over the top the moment the temperature drops half a degree, gold jewellery rather than silver because it warms the navy up.
For anything with sleeves or a midi length, block heeled boots and a leather jacket take it straight into fully wearable autumn territory without it looking like it’s trying too hard.
Occasion wise this print has range most people underestimate. It does a garden do, a christening, a Sunday lunch that’s slightly more than a Sunday lunch, and it does the office if the cut is right. It is, properly and finally, my answer to “what do I wear” when I can’t be bothered to decide.
