The Best Blue Satin Skirts

I said for years that blue satin skirts were a bridesmaid’s problem, not mine. Something you get talked into wearing to someone else’s wedding and then never again. I was wrong, and I’m addressing that opinion directly now: I’m sorry, blue satin skirt, you were never the problem, it was the polyester nightmare I bought in 2016 that pulled at every seam within a month.

A good one has actual weight to it. Satin that’s thin enough to move but not so thin it clings to tights like static wants a divorce. Bias cut, ideally, so it skims rather than sits, and a shade of blue with a bit of depth to it, not the flat, slightly plastic pale blue that photographs fine but looks cheap under any light that isn’t a ring light.

The proper ones catch light when you walk. That’s the whole point of satin, if it’s not doing that, you’ve bought the wrong one.

Styling wise, the instinct is always to go full shine head to toe, and I’d stop you at the door.

Balance it with something flat and a bit rough round the edges, a chunky knit, a leather jacket, a plain white shirt tucked in and slightly untucked again on purpose. Trainers work better than you’d think, that contrast of dressed up and dressed down is what stops it looking like fancy dress. Heels obviously for evening, but a low block heel does the same job with less risk of you texting someone at 11pm asking them to come and get you.

Occasion wise, this is the skirt for the party you actually want to look good at, not the one you’re obligated to attend. Christmas do, a birthday dinner somewhere with low lighting and a booking under someone else’s name, a date where you want to look like you tried without announcing it. It also does a strange, quiet job in daylight, worn under a big coat with boots, where the shine peeks out and does more work than the rest of the outfit combined.

The one I finally got right, my colleague Priya just looked at me across the office and said “oh, that’s the one.” No further comment needed. That’s the bar.
