A good V neck jumper does one thing that a crew neck can’t: it opens up the neckline without needing a shirt underneath to make sense of it. That’s the whole appeal. The angle of the neck draws the eye down and lengthens everything above the waist, which is why it flatters such a wide range of body shapes and why it works equally well thrown over a collared shirt or worn completely on its own. The ones that earn their place in a rail are cut close enough to skim the body rather than swamp it, with a rib trim at the neck and cuff that holds its shape after repeated wear instead of stretching into a slack, wavy edge within a fortnight.

Fabric is where most of the difference lies. A fine gauge merino or a cotton with a bit of cashmere through it will sit flat against the body and layer without adding bulk, while a heavier, looser knit reads more like outerwear and wants to be the only layer doing the talking.

Both have their place, but they are not interchangeable, and a jumper bought for layering under a blazer needs a very different weight to one meant to be worn alone with jeans on a cold Saturday.

Styling it well is mostly about what happens at the neckline.

A shirt collar worn open underneath adds structure and turns a soft jumper into something that reads as put together rather than thrown on. Tucked into tailored trousers with the sleeves pushed up, it earns its place in an office. Left loose over a slip skirt or wide leg denim, it slides into evening without any effort at reinvention. A fine gold chain or a scarf knotted at the throat fills the neckline nicely on the days when bare skin feels like too much.

Where it really proves itself is in that stretch of the year when a coat is too much indoors but a shirt alone isn’t enough. It suits the commute, the long lunch, the gallery visit, the dinner where the dress code is unspoken but everyone still manages to look considered. Overrated is the boxy, thick knit that swallows the frame and makes the neckline meaningless. What matters is the cut close to the body, a trim that holds, and a V deep enough to notice but shallow enough to still feel like daywear.
