A white cami top is the most unforgiving thing in a warm weather wardrobe, which is exactly why it separates the useful pieces from the ones that end up at the back of a drawer. White shows every flaw in construction that darker fabrics hide, so the fabric itself has to be doing real work. Look for a weight that holds its shape without stiffness, something with a bit of body so it does not go sheer under shop lighting or cling in the wrong places by mid afternoon. A cami cut from a slubby cotton or a proper silk blend behaves completely differently from one in thin viscose, which tends to go limp and slightly grey after a couple of washes.
The straps and neckline are where most of these tops succeed or fail. Adjustable straps matter more than people expect, since a cami that sits half an inch too low pulls the whole neckline out of shape and shows every bra strap you own.
A scooped or softly squared neckline generally photographs and wears better than a plunging one, because it stays put through a day of movement rather than needing constant adjustment.
Seams should sit flat, and the hem should have enough weight to fall straight rather than curling under.
Styling one well is about contrast in texture rather than colour, since the top itself is already doing the quiet work. Worn under a sharp blazer or a structured jacket, it reads as considered rather than underdressed. Tucked into wide leg trousers or a denim skirt with a proper waistband, it gives a sharp, put together line without trying too hard. Layered under a linen shirt left open, it becomes the kind of thing that works from a lunch straight into an evening without a change of clothes. It also earns its place as the piece worn alone with good tailoring on a warm evening, where the simplicity of it is the entire point.
Where it suits occasions best is anywhere the rest of the outfit is doing something more interesting, a bold trouser, a heavy fabric jacket, a strong shoe. It is not a top that wants to be the main event, and the ones that earn their money are the ones that understand that and are cut well enough to hold their own quietly underneath everything else.
