Yellow is the colour most women think they need to avoid on a skirt and nine times out of ten, that’s because they choose the wrong yellow rather than the colour being the issue. A mustard or ochre skirt in a heavier cotton or wool blend reads completely differently to a sharp, citrus tone in a fluid viscose, and knowing which one suits you and the season is more important than any style trick when it comes to styling. Warmer, muted yellows sit closer to your skin tone and work through autumn and winter in denser fabrics, while cleaner, brighter yellows want lightness, movement and sun to actually look right.
Construction is where I find a lot of yellow skirts fall down, because whilst black hides all the sins, yellow exposes them. Any pull, pucker and cheap seam is amplified by that bright hue, so a good yellow skirt will hold its shape at the waistband, not cling on you in a way that reveals the lining and use a fabric with enough weight to swing rather than cling to your legs. Midi lengths in a slight bias cut are the most forgiving and flattering across a genuine range of bodies and shapes, while if you’re going for a stiffer, more structured mini, keep it plain.

You don’t want extra volume fighting with the colour itself.
As far as styling goes, a yellow skirt is mostly about restraint elsewhere. Yellow is loud enough doing its own thing, so keep everything else quiet: white, black, navy or a soft neutral knit. With yellow, texture can do the interesting thing rather than another colour. Throw a simple fitted top or fine knit over it and tuck it in to let that skirt be the focus.

Same goes for shoes – keep them plain. A low sandal, loafer or white trainer for something more casual. Denim jackets and tan leather both look great with yellow, warmy-toned skirts too.
With yellow skirts, I find it’s a daytime colour first and foremost. Brilliant for lunches, garden parties, holidays and anything outdoors in natural daylight where that brightness has somewhere to go. You can move into evening-time if you choose a fabric with some shine or fluidity to it, pair it with heels and minimal jewellery but other than that I’d avoid dressing them down into anything too casual or sporty. Yellow always asks for a bit of polish to look intentional, not like you just threw it on. It’s treated with the right fabric and kept simple around the edges, a yellow skirt can earn its place way beyond one bright summer’s afternoon.
