Shop the Beige Blouses We’d Actually Wear

For a long time I boycotted beige. Factually-speaking: my logic, such as it was, went something like this: beige is what colour aspirations start out as and then become if you lose interest midway through the decision-making process. Factually-speaking II: I maintained this belief through no fewer than four wardrobe purges before I actually Purged properly and realised that I’d been doing it wrong. The entire time, I had just been buying the wrong beige. There is beige that is bad (bruised office photocopier) and beige that is good (warmer, closer to oatmeal or clay, flattering as hell) and which does a complexion good turns that crisp white just can’t muster. I owe beige a heartfelt public apology and this is the free header that’ll probably have to suffice.

What makes a beige blouse worth your while is largely down to fabric and fit, because the colour itself is not going to save you. It’s going to show every rubbish detail clear as day.

A polyester that behaves this way will cling and gleam like some sort of wrapper regardless of the colour it comes in. Where as the right kind of cotton, silk, or even decent viscose will reflect light in a manner that elevates the otherwise-not-expensive and a nicely softly blouse or interesting neckline will do more for you visually than any pattern. My favourites have some sort of structure at the shoulder and lots of give everywhere else so that you’re not constantly cuffing and holding in your arms. Which means you look like you’re ready to present at a board meeting, should you need to. But if all you need to do is slide into lunch, incredible.

Speaking of sliding in, stylistically speaking it’s also my go-to blank canvas blouse. Pair it with trousers or a skirt for work and it’ll look seriously sharp with minimal effort on your part. Leave it loose, half tucked over jeans with the sleeves rolled up and bam: you’ve just defeated the whole concept of corporate. Throw it under a blazer that’s been tailored in camel or navy, under a leather jacket to slim down the silhouette, or just wear it straight up with gold jewellery and absolutely nothing else to distract from the stare-down because beige is neither flashy nor demanding of competition, and will reward you handsomely should you give it none.

Which brings me to the point of wear. It’s great for client meetings, or lunches you can’t really dress-down for, weddings where you want to look like you made an effort without killing yourself/trying to upstage the bride, and any old day where you just don’t wanna deal with picking a colour before 9am. Which is why it is so infuriatingly the thing I scoffed at for so long, and now find myself reaching for all the damn time.
