The Best Beige Blazers For Layering This Season

For years I avoided beige like it was the clothing version of speaking up at a dinner party. Boring, unassuming, it whispered of people who don’t want to offend by having an opinion on what they wear. Except I’ve realised I was wrong. And I want to put that right here. Because a beige blazer is the Swiss army knife of your coat closet, and I wasted a tenth of my life dismissing it in favour of navy blue.

Let’s start with what makes one a good one. Structure. Hand. It needs some substance, a tailoring that says something but not enough that you look like you’re literally wearing your dads suit to read Ketley Jenner’s wedding poem. Hand is more important than most people realise, a blazer that wrinkles as soon as you sit on a train is NOT a blazer, it’s a bag for bin logs.

You want something that actually hangs correctly on your shoulders. Wool, or a wool blend, that can take being stuffed into a suitcase when you’re melting on the underground.

They’ll look after yours in return.

When it comes to styling, beige is where it really shines. Literally. It layers under coats beautifully, so it’s great for that Notquitejune/yet sort of weather where a sweater feels inadequate but so does a parka. Throw it on a white t-shirt and jeans and it looks intentional but not like you went to much effort. Throw it on a slip dress with boots and it feels less “office” immediately.

Throw it on a hoodie for school drop off and all of a sudden it doesn’t look like you didn’t try at all. Bonus points.

It also goes with everything. Seriously, everything. Black pants, white sweaters, khaki, floral prints. Beige lets them other colours wear the pants, as it were.

Sure it’s flattering. Kind of. But that’s not why you need one. You need one because no matter how weird the rest of your outfit is it will all get along with beige in the morning.

And as for occasions, it’s as versitile as they come. Monday mornings, that Sunday lunch when it’s too casual for suits but too soon after rolling out of bed for vintage dresses. Airport/transit/luggage carousel scenarios where you need one piece that doesn’t scream TOURIST but won’t have you sweat by the time you land. Beige isn’t flashy. It’s just easily right, and I promise that’s more valuable than I used to think.
