Shop the Beige Maxi Dresses We’d Actually Wear

I used to believe beige was the uniform version of a shrug. Of an un-choice. Something you wore if you didn’t want to bother having an opinion on clothes. I had one beige dress: thrown together last minute from Primark before a christening in 2019. We both agreed—it did nothing for me and I did nothing for it—and I never looked back. So yeah. Hear me out. But when done right, a beige maxi dress isn’t a shrug. It’s a choice. Took me way too long to realise that one.

THE GOOD ONES make the effort through fabric and cut—not colour alone. Because beige without shape or drape reads simply as unfinished. You want something that actually feels heavyish when you pick it up; the material should billow around your legs when you walk, instead of the dress staying put and mimicking a paper bag stuffed in a hedge.

ANY GOOD ONES have some sort of detail thrown in; a tie, a seam, a neckline doing something other than just sloping there. You need a bit of structure against the flat of the beige, on beige, cut flat. Otherwise you risk blending into the background like the beige paint of an Airbnb walls.

THAT SAID: styling it is where things get fun. Gold jewellery suddenly has to work harder than it does for almost any other colour—it lifts the entire look instead of just sitting on top of it. Tan/brown leather, a nice sandal, anything metallic on your feet come summer. Throw a blazer on top and BAM: instant upgrade from “someone at a wedding” to “someone having lunch who also probably has feelings about wine.” Contrast isn’t something to be scared of either: bright bag, red lip. Beige is blank enough canvas that these things pop more than they ever will against black.

IN TERMS OF OCCASSIONS, it’s your late spring wedding outfit. Your godmother’s 60th birthday. Your “I want to look smart but also had two coffees so don’t-

get me wrong” work thing. Photographs nicely against most things—if that’s not weird to say, it kind of is until you’re standing outside of a stone church in the heat of July and THEN you’ll understand why I’m saying that. It’s not clubbing gear or funeral attire, it’s that in-between: garden parties, long lunches, the days where you want to look like you put some effort in without actually trying too hard to prove that you did.
