For three years, I assumed beige was what happened when colour gave up trying. Magnolia walls. Hospital corridors. That one raincoat my mum owned in 1998. Then I wore a beige mini dress to lunch that I nearly didn’t go to, and some woman at the till told me it was the best thing she’d seen all week and I had to sit with that for a second. Done right, a beige mini dress isn’t flat. It has some depth to it, a touch of gold or grey depending on what suits your skin, and it should look expensive rather than like a giant plaster cast. Skimp on it and beige goes chalky under lights and hangs cruelly off you come 6pm. The good stuff has some weight to it, some fabric with body, so that it drifts rather than clings across the parts you’re trying not to. Oh hello Priya.
On jewellery and shoes andbags and coats – beige’s your friend. Styling-wise it doesn’t clash with anything, which is corny AF but actually really helpful when you’re getting ready with five minutes to spare. Gold jewellery on beige looks luxe. Silver looks sleek and harsher, in the best way. A pop coloured bag, red or black or even forest green, means it doesn’t look like one big beige blob if you catch it across the room. Tan boots = day time. Strap heels and a nice coat = night. I’ve worn mine 11am to 9pm with nothing changed except the shoes for work brunch and a friend’s birthday dinner and my boss Priya spotted me and raised her eyebrows, mouthing ‘again?’ Like I was some sort of cheating,, husband-stealing monster when actually the dress was the entire POINT.
It’s also great for things where you maybe haven’t quite decided the dress code. Christenings. Engagement parties. A lunch with someone where it could also become a spot of shopping? Yeah, beige will nail it. Work drinks where you’re not sure if smart-casual is actually smart or casual. Beige will never overdress you, but also never underdress you either. It just kinda…. exists. In its beige elegance while you sort out everything else.
