I spent years telling brides that black bridesmaid dresses were a bit funereal, a bit “sorry for your loss” for an occasion that’s supposed to be joyful. I was completely wrong, and I’ve now stood in enough churches and barns and marquees to say so with confidence.

Black works because it does the one thing bridesmaid dresses almost never manage, which is flatter every single person wearing it without a group chat argument about whose shade of blush looks worse on camera. It photographs cleanly, it doesn’t fight with a bouquet, and it lets the bride’s dress do the work it’s meant to do instead of competing with five different interpretations of “dusty rose.” A good one isn’t stark or severe, it’s got movement, proper drape, something that catches light rather than swallowing it. Satin, a soft crepe, a bit of bias cut, that’s what stops it reading as mourning wear and starts it reading as intentional.

Styling wise, this is where black earns its keep twice over.

During the day, gold jewellery, a strappy sandal, hair down and loose, keeps it warm rather than austere. Come evening, the same dress takes a heel change, a bolder lip, maybe a little shrug or jacket if there’s a marquee involved and the temperature drops the second the sun does, because it always does, without fail, every wedding I’ve been to since 2016. It’s also the rare bridesmaid colour that survives being worn again afterwards, to a work do, to someone else’s fortieth, without anyone clocking it as “that dress from the wedding.” A friend of mine wore hers to a January leaving drinks and got asked twice where it was from, which is more than can be said for the taffeta situation she wore to my sister’s wedding in 2014, may it never be spoken of again.

It suits black tie weddings obviously, but it’s just as at home at a registry office do or an autumn wedding where the light’s already going by four. Mixed style bridal parties love it too, since one colour in different necklines and lengths looks deliberate rather than mismatched. It’s not the safe choice, whatever anyone’s aunt says. It’s the clever one.
