I spent three years thinking blue joggers meant one specific navy pair from a sports shop, the kind that ping back at the ankle and make a noise when you walk. Told everyone who asked that joggers were a home only garment. I was wrong, and worse, I said it with confidence to actual people who then saw me in public wearing exactly that pair. So this is me, in writing, taking it back.
The blue that works isn’t navy trying to be black. It’s a proper mid or slate blue, something with a bit of depth to it, because that’s the shade that reads as clothing rather than as pyjamas you got caught in.
The fabric matters more than anything else on the hanger. You want a jersey with actual weight to it, something that holds its own shape rather than collapsing round your ankles by lunchtime. A good pair sits with a slight taper, not a skinny cuff that pinches, not a wide leg that flaps about, just enough shape that they look deliberate.
Styling wise, the trick is to dress them up slightly harder than feels natural, because blue joggers already look relaxed, so everything else needs to do a bit of work.
A structured jacket on top does it instantly. So does a proper shirt, collar out, sleeves pushed up, tucked in loosely rather than neatly. Trainers are the obvious call and they’re right, but a chunky loafer or a boot changes the whole read, suddenly it’s not “I gave up today” it’s “I decided on this.” My colleague Priya saw me in mine with a blazer and boots and said “hang on, that’s actually put together,” which from her is roughly a standing ovation.
Where they earn their place is anywhere that used to demand something stiffer and no longer does. Travel days, obviously, but also the version of a casual work day where you still want to look like you tried, dinner that starts casual and might not stay that way, the weekend errand run that somehow turns into three hours out. They survive a full day of movement without going baggy or shiny, which I tested properly on a delayed train journey where I sat, stood, paced a platform, and sat again, and they still looked like joggers rather than something that had given up. That’s the actual test. Everything else is just colour.
