A midi dress earns its place at a summer wedding by doing two things at once: holding its shape through a long day of standing, sitting, dancing and photographs, while still moving like it means it. That’s a harder brief than it sounds, and it’s why so many disappoint. The fabric has to have enough structure to skim rather than cling, but enough give to sit down in without a fight. Styling should be kept simple. A midi length wants a heel with some height, even a low block, to stop the proportions looking truncated, and a clutch rather than anything bulky. Jewellery earns its keep at the neckline and ear rather than stacked everywhere at once. For a daytime ceremony, a structured shrug or a light jacket carries you through the cooler church or registry office moment, then comes off for the reception.
