A varsity jacket earns its place on a night out by doing the one thing sequins and slip dresses can’t: it looks deliberate rather than dressed up. The good ones have real structure through the shoulder and body, usually a wool or wool blend torso with contrast leather or faux leather sleeves, ribbed trims at the collar, cuff and hem that actually hold their shape after a few wears rather than going slack by midnight. Snap buttons or a sturdy zip matter more than people think, a flimsy closure gives the whole jacket a costume feel rather than a considered one. Weight is the other tell. A proper varsity jacket has enough heft to sit on the shoulders with intent, not flap open like a cardigan.
Styling one for evening is about contrast, playing the sportiness against something sharper.
A slip dress or a fitted satin midi under a varsity jacket reads far more interesting than the same dress under a blazer, because the pairing feels like a decision rather than a default. Cigarette trousers and a simple bodysuit work the same way, letting the jacket be the texture story while everything underneath stays clean and unfussy. Boots do more for the silhouette than trainers here, a heeled boot or a sleek ankle boot gives the proportions somewhere to land, especially if the jacket is on the boxier side.
Jewellery should stay minimal, the jacket already carries visual weight through colour blocking and lettering, so a single strong earring or a chain is enough.
Where it genuinely earns its keep is on nights that need a bit of edge without tipping into overdressed, drinks that start early and run late, a gig followed by a bar, anything where you’ll be moving between temperatures and don’t want to be carrying a coat all evening. It also solves the problem of dressing for a crowd of mixed formality, since it reads as effort without reading as occasion wear, which makes it useful for the sort of evening that has no clear dress code but still deserves some thought. The ones worth buying are the ones that hold their shape off the body as well as on it, draped over a chair rather than folded away, because that structure is exactly what makes them worth wearing in the first place.
