A white shirt earns its place on the basis of construction, not colour. The good ones are cut from a cotton with enough substance to hold its shape through a day of wear, poplin for crispness, oxford for a softer, more textured hand that forgives a crease rather than announcing it. What separates a shirt worth owning from one that isn’t is in the details you only notice once you’re wearing it: a collar with proper interfacing that stands away from the neck cleanly, a yoke that sits flat across the shoulders without pulling, buttons set closely enough that gaping isn’t a constant negotiation, and a hem cut long enough to stay tucked without bunching. Sleeves matter more than people think. Too narrow and the whole shirt reads mean; too full and it loses the precision that makes a white shirt worth wearing in the first place.
Fit is where opinions should be firm.
Boxy and oversized has its place for a relaxed, undone mood, worn open over a vest or knotted at the waist, but a shirt that’s actually tailored through the body, following the waist without clinging to it, does more work across more occasions.
It goes under tailoring at the office, sits well with denim at the weekend, and can be dressed up with a slim skirt or trouser for evening without ever looking like it’s trying too hard.
Styling a white shirt is largely about what you do with the details rather than layering it under a dozen other things. Push the sleeves up, leave the top two buttons undone, let the collar sit slightly askew rather than perfectly starched, and it stops looking like uniform and starts looking like a decision. Tucked into high waisted trousers it does formal without stiffness. Left loose over a slip dress or tied at the front over shorts, it turns casual daytime dressing into something considered rather than thrown together.
Occasion wise, this is the piece that moves between contexts without needing to be swapped out. It works for the office, for travel, for a lunch that might turn into an evening, for layering under knitwear in the colder months. The measure of a good one isn’t how it looks fresh out of the packaging, it’s how it behaves after a full day of actual wear, which is exactly why the fabric and construction matter more than anything else on the hanger.
