Yellow is what elevates a nice blouse into a good one, but only if you pick the right shade. It needs to be considered. Bright yellows can overwhelm or accentuate paler skin tones, so the best yellows exist somewhere between butter and mustard; faded but not wan, enough contrast to stand out but not so much that it overwhelms. Hold it up to your face in daylight before you buy it. That’s a true stylist trick – if it washes you out it will wash you out, regardless of how good it looks hanging in store.
Go for quality fabric. It does a lot of the heavy lifting. A blouse that actually has some weight to it, a true cotton poplin or a silk or silk blend will hold colour and form much better than a cheap thin viscose that will cling to you and crease by lunchtime. Pay attention to how it hangs off the shoulder, not just how the swatch looks on its own.
Speaking of shoulders and fit, look for structure around the collar and cuffs. Yellow wants sharp lines, so if you blouse has a tendency to bunch up or flop around on the shoulders it will immediately undermine any attempt at intentional colour pops. Buttons are key too, they should fit snugly and lay flat against the blouse, not separate or gap. It’s doubly important if you’re wearing it as a statement piece without a jacket or cardigan on top.
Much of how to wear yellow comes down to balancing it with the rest of your outfit. Yellow is a statement colour, so generally speaking the rest of your outfit should be quieter than it. Well-cut trousers in navy, black, grey or soft camel will allow the blouse to be the focus of your outfit without distraction, while pairing it with jeans has a similar effect with a more casual feel. The camel/coat combination is especially effective in Autumn and Winter as camel picks out the warmth of the yellow. That’s where yellow really shines – anywhere in between formal and casual. An office day that may turn into night, a semi-important lunch, a meeting where you want to look quietly confident but not like you’re there to command attention. It can also help add some much needed warmth to winter outfits that otherwise rely on Christmas tree print or teddybear embellishment to achieve the same effect.
Avoid yellow that is made from overly synthetic fabric that hangs uncomfortably on your skin, gathers static or pills after one wash. A yellow blouse should enhance your outfit, not overwhelm it or dress it down. A good blouse should feel intentional, not like you accidentally wore a postage stamp to work.
