Hand Picked, The Yellow A Line Skirts Worth Shopping

Yellow is clearly the thing that makes an A line skirt worth singling out here, but it’s important that the shape works first and foremost. A well cut A line falls at or just below your natural waist and flares out in an uncomplicated sweep, it shouldn’t cling at the hip or gather bulk at the seam. Ideally it’ll be cut from something with enough structure to maintain that line all on its own. A heavyweight cotton, a bonded crepe, a nicely made poplin rather than something too soft that it starts looking like a straight skirt halfway through your morning. If it’s too lightweight you’ll need to wear a lining or half slip underneath to maintain the shape which is worth checking before you try it on. Moving onto colour, there’s a big difference between yellow that makes you think sunshine andripe citrus and yellow that makes you think labrador eyes in fluorescent lighting. Mustard and ochre will play nicer with office lighting than lemon and butter. I always recommend swatching near the face before buying something yellow, because it edges closer to skin tone conversations than any other colour on the rail usually.
Anyway. The yellows that are worth investing in will either have a slightly warm or cool undertone picked out deliberately, they won’t just be whatever shade happened to be in stock when you went to order.
Styling an A line skirt is mostly about not doing too much elsewhere. Pair it with a crisp white shirt and tuck it in, or a fine knit in navy or grey. Denim shirts work well for spring and summer, or a black polo neck for when it gets colder. All of those things let the skirt do the talking rather than fight for attention. Shoes and jackets are where you can change the mood completely. Tan sandals and a woven sling bag for daytime and days out at the markets, a pointy flat or low heel and a leather jacket for something that should last into evening without needing a whole new outfit. Gold jewellery looks nicer than silver against yellow in most cases, but that’s just personal preference.
When it comes to occasion, this is very much a day time, Spring/Summer skirt. Great for garden parties, long lunches, races, city-breaks where you want the skirt to look like you put some thought into it without feeling like you can’t move once it’s tightened. It also photographs really well, which we all care about more than we let on. Bonus points for how effortlessly it works against a neutral background; whether that’s your office wall or a stone terrace.
Last but not least, don’t ever shy away from a yellow A line because it feels too bold. It’s cut should allow you to wear something bolder on top if you want to. A well cut yellow A line skirt isn’t a shy piece of clothing, treat it like one and you’ll miss the point.
