For a long time I thought beige trench coats were your mum’s jackets at the school gates. Sorry beige. I’m sorry, beige. With all my heart. But thank cream coats for existing, because it took buying a truly appalling cream mac in 2019 for a wedding I hadn’t even wanted to attend anyway, to realise that beige and cream are NOT THE SAME COLOUR, and I had in fact been blaming the completely wrong colour for years on end.

If done right, which rare as hell, a beige trench can make whatever you’re wearing underneath look more expensive than it actually is. Jeans and a basic tee cease to just be jeans and a basic tee as soon as you throw a decent trenchcoat on.
It doesn’t have to be beige, but it kind of should be. You’re not dressing up, the coat is dressing you. Far less important than people make it out to be but you do want something with a bit of warmth to it; a biscuit tone or sandy shade rather than something leaning too much into the grey territory, because that’s what elevates it from institutional wear to actually liking how you look.
It’s all in the fit. They almost always mess this step up.
Baggy and you’re just wearing a coloured duvet with a belt around it. Too slim and you lose the whole silhouette; the clever bit is in its slight shoulder-pad swagger, in the collar that actually stays up when it wants to, in the belt that’s meant to be tied at your waist and knotted doctor, not buckled like you’re about to attend jury duty. My work mate Priya caught me tying mine behind the toilet once and said ‘christine, you look like you’re about to crack a case’, and I’ve chosen to let that slide because it’s honestly the biggest compliment I’ve ever received about a coat.
Your underneath wears want contrast. Throw on some trainers if you’re running errands, a chunky heel if you’re hitting dinner. Tailored trousers if you’re trying to look like you’ve got it totally figured out on a Tuesday. Speaking from experience you probably don’t, but it’ll make you look like you do. It’ll get you through London’s entire unpredictable weather gamut. Mine has been soaked through and dried at a platform in Clapham Junction more times than I care to remember and looked fabulous after whilst I was still drenched. Weddings, the office, that kind of Sunday where you’re meeting someone for coffee but you both know it’s not just coffee? It’s got you.
Buy one beige trench and you will have solved fifteen wardrobe dilemmas all before they happen.
