Hand Picked, The Rain Jackets Worth Shopping

A good rain jacket earns its place through construction, not colour. Look at the seams first: taped or welded seams keep water from creeping through the stitch holes, and a jacket without them is really just a shower-resistant coat playing a longer game than it can win. The fabric matters just as much. A proper hard shell, whether that’s a technical laminate or a coated cotton, should shed water in beads rather than soak it up, and it should still breathe enough that you’re not trapped in your own condensation after a brisk walk to the station. Anything that goes limp and clingy after ten minutes of drizzle isn’t doing its job, however good it looks on the hanger.

Fit is where most rain jackets go wrong.

Too fitted and there’s no room for a jumper underneath, which defeats the purpose on a properly cold, wet day. Too voluminous and it stops looking like outerwear and starts looking like you’re borrowing someone else’s tent. The ones that earn their place sit with a bit of ease through the shoulders and body, taper slightly at the hem, and have a hood with enough structure to stay up in wind rather than collapsing over your eyes at the first gust. Adjustable cuffs and a drawcord waist aren’t fussy extras, they’re what stops the whole thing filling with air like a sail.

Styling one is less complicated than people make it. Over tailoring, it reads sharp and slightly utilitarian, especially in a longer length that skims the top of the thigh. Over knitwear and straight leg trousers, it does the job of a coat without the bulk. Cropped styles work well over dresses for the transitional months, when you want protection without losing the shape of what’s underneath. Colour is worth considering properly rather than defaulting to black, since a rain jacket is one of the few practical pieces that can carry real colour without looking like fancy dress.

Occasion wise, this is a category built for the actual rhythm of a working week: the school run, the commute, the festival field, the weekend that starts dry and doesn’t stay that way. It should never be an afterthought thrown on as damage control. Treated properly, it’s one of the few genuinely functional pieces that also does real styling work.
