Yellow is not a colour that Photoshops well on everyone, but when it works, it works exceptionally well. It’s also difficult to get right on a cami; which is precisely why when you do find a good one, it rewards you for investing the time. They’re made with fabric that has enough weight to it to hold its shape around the neckline, whether that’s silk, a heavier satin or a denser jersey, not anything that’s thin, slips around and clings to the bits you don’t want to highlight or exposes every stitch used in the construction. Take notice of how the straps are finished too; camis with adjustable straps that lie flat on the shoulder and don’t twist, and something with some attention to the bust, either a built in shelf or a strip of stretch banding so you don’t spend the whole time pulling your top back down. You’ll notice that the yellow itself varies greatly. Contrary to popular belief, the actual shade matters. True yellows that sit closer to butter or mustard than they do neon will suit more people and pair with more colours than you might expect. And that is what makes for a cami you reach for constantly, as opposed to a novelty piece you grab once a summer before packing it away until next year.
As with any brightly coloured top, styling one is all about balancing your look. Yellow will always pull attention so everything else can be muted. Pair it with white jeans, slim trousers or a midi skirt in stone or olive. If you want to layer, that’s where camis earn their place in your wardrobe all-year-round rather than just for spring/summer. Throw a fine knit cardigan or an oversized blazer on top, worn open to keep your yellow visible and add some shape, or throw a leather jacket on over it to break up the soft fabric in a way that feels more edgy than sweet. Yellow also goes with gold jewellery, of course it does, and Gold works beautifully with yellow, but don’t be afraid to pair silver with your yellow either, it looks great and feels less predictable, which is worth experimenting with before jumping straight to gold every time.
Depending on what you wear it with, can also be worn easily between day and night. Slip it under a linen shirt with the buttons undone and it does what a smart blouse would for weekend lunches or travel. Wear it on its own with a pair of tailored trousers and a heeled sandal and it’s just as easy wearing into the evening. Don’t make the mistake of only wearing your yellow cami as a statement or you’ll never use it as much as you could. Treat it like you would any other neutral in your wardrobe; I promise you’ll find endless ways to style it once you stop writing it off as a ‘nice to have’ and commit to it whole heartedly. That, is the beauty of investing in a good yellow cami.
