The Beige Denim Jackets Worth Your Money

For two years I swore I hated beige denim. It took me that long to realise beige denim is not khaki that’s given up. Insane, I know. But hear me out. I had one. Bought hysterically before a christening. It did exactly what bad beige does – washed me out. Lived up to its name and left me pale. Short trip to Macular Land if you wear that wrong. So, hear me out. If you’re sitting there sceptical, great. Say it out loud. Tackle it. But please tackle the right beige denim jacket. Because here’s the thing. A good one will do the opposite of mine.
Deep, deep wash is key. Flat and you’ve got chalky hospital shirt vibes. Nope.
Go for one with tonal movement; something warm that skews towards stone or sand rather than baby porridge. That warmth is what stops beige denim looking like you’re moonlighting as a construction labourer when you flip the office lights on. Fit is just as important as colour. Boxy shoulders with a bit of collar means you can retire your jacket to a rail with pride. Everything too cropped and fitted just looks like you’re cosplaying as a chef.
The joy of styling it is that it effortlessly takes your outfit up a notch. Pair it with a black dress and it stops you looking like you’re wearing a sack. Throw it over a striped tee and jeans and voila – French, doe-eyed bragging rights.
My colleague Priya wore hers with a green midi skirt to meet clients on a Tuesday. She got compliments. Beige denim makes people think you’ve been somewhere. It hasn’t. Only that you know how to dress.
Where it truly shines is for that weirdocc – you know the one, that in between occasion that doesn’t have a dress code. That Sunday dinner. The lunch that could turn into drinks. The wedding with a brunch the next morning when no one wants to wear anything structured. It lived in my suitcase for a week whilst I travelled around rainy Bristol last October without going patchy or beige-jean crayon-ing at the cuffs. Which is what you should test your denim on, by the way. Not on a hanger.
Learn to leave it open. Yes, all the time. Buttoned it up and it’s fodder for the fete hustle all over again. Nobody wants that twice.
