I bought a black midi dress in 2019 that I can only describe as “office Halloween witch,” all severe angles and a hemline that moved like it had its own opinions about where I was going. The best ones feel almost plain on the hanger and then completely different once they’re on, which is the whole trick. You want fabric with a bit of weight to it, something that skims rather than clings, and a fastening that doesn’t require a second person and a run up.

Styling one is where the fun actually starts, because black midi dresses are basically a blank page. Boots and a leather jacket for anything after 6pm. A blazer over the top and flat loafers for the version of work where you still want to feel like a person. Gold jewellery if you’re leaning dressed up, a single decent bag if you’re leaning down.

I’ve worn the same dress to a christening and, four days later, to a dinner where someone brought their own wine in a tote bag, and both times it looked like it belonged there. That’s not a coincidence, that’s the whole point of the shape.

Occasion wise, this is the dress you reach for when you can’t be bothered to decide, which sounds like faint praise and isn’t. Weddings where you’re not sure of the dress code. Work events that turn into drinks. Any dinner where you want to look like you tried without anyone being able to prove it.
