I used to think black velvet dresses were a Christmas party cliche, the kind of thing you wear once to your work do and then it sits at the back of the wardrobe smelling faintly of mulled wine for the other eleven months. I was wrong, and I’m addressing that opinion directly now: I owe velvet an apology. The good ones are not a costume, they’re just a proper dress that happens to catch the light differently.
What separates the ones worth your money from the ones that look like a school play curtain is the weight of the fabric and how it moves. Cheap velvet stands away from the body and creases the second you sit down, so you spend the whole night looking like you’ve been folded up in a drawer. The better ones have a bit of stretch, they hold their shape when you sit, dance, or fold yourself into the back of a taxi, and they catch light in patches rather than going flat and matte all over.
That sheen doing something different depending on the angle is the entire point, so if a velvet dress looks the same from every direction, it’s not doing its job.
Styling one is less complicated than people make it. Bare legs and heels if you’re warm blooded and going somewhere heated, opaque tights and boots if you’re not, and either reading is correct depending on the room, not the dress.
A structured coat over the top stops it tipping into fancy dress territory, and simple jewellery, one good earring situation rather than three competing metals, lets the fabric be the whole event. Where people go wrong is over accessorising, as if velvet needs help. It doesn’t. It’s already the loudest thing in the room texture wise, even in black.
Occasion wise this is party season’s actual workhorse, but I’d argue it’s wasted if you only bring it out in December. A good black velvet dress does dinner in February, a leaving do, a date where you want to look like you tried without announcing it. The colour does the quiet work of matching anything, and the fabric does the loud work of making it look considered. That combination, understated colour and a fabric with actual presence, is rarer than people give it credit for.
