Technically speaking, a draped dress accomplishes one thing: it eliminates seams as the shaping device. Instead of cutting and darting fabric to a specific silhouette, it’s gathered, twisted or wrapped on the body. It moves as you do, and settles differently on every wearer. That should be part of the appeal. It should skim instead of cling, accentuate the waist without creating it and fall with enough substance to look intentional, not lazy. Fabric choice is more important here than in any other kind of dress.

Matte jersey, crepe and silk or viscose blends with just enough body work well.
Thin fabrics will cling and lose all shape, stiff fabrics won’t fall easily and will just look wrinkled.
Construction-wise is where the great ones differ from the sad ones that make you want to stop believing. There should be gathering at the waist or hip that’s intentional, not a drape that’s simply there because there was extra fabric and nobody thought to do anything with it. Cowls should fall neatly in a deep fold, not hang loosely and gaping open (hint hint: there’s probably a lining doing subtle work there). Wrap dresses should actually overlap enough that they don’t fall apart after a day of sitting and moving about, not just at your dress shop fitting. If the drape looks exactly the same on a hanger as it does on you, someone didn’t do their job when they were cutting the pattern.
With styling, there’s less to add and more to take away. The dress is doing all the work. Keep your accessories simple and structural, not cute. Think stiff clutch, angular heel, tailored blazer with exagerated shoulder to contrast all that flow.

Fine gold jewellery works well too, since your eye will already be drawn to how the fabric moves. Throw a slip of a cardigan or crisp coat over it and it goes day to night in no time. Packing one for vacation is always a good idea.
It’s your go to category for everything cocktail related. Dinner parties, cocktail hours, weddings, those sorts of daytime things that stretch into nighttime. They photograph well if you want them to, because they move well. They’re also ideal for the day where you have lunch plugged into your calendar because you know you should, but will probably spend majority eating at your desk. Draped dresses are designed for when you don’t want something fitted but something still wants to look like you put in some effort.
