For three years I thought bucket bags were just festival style, some floppy suede nonsense that went with wellies and a bum bag, not with a blazer. I was wrong. Boy, was I wrong. I want to get that off my chest because I spent a long time loudly proclaiming my *wrong* opinion. A black bucket bag, done right, is one of the smarter, more wearable things you can sling across your body and take into an office, and I say that as someone who previously would sniff audibly if someone walked into a Monday morning meeting with one.
What makes it work isn’t the drawstring or the shape necessarily, it’s what’s inside. The thin, slouchy ones might look good draped over your arm but put your laptop in and down it goes, leaving you rooting around inside for your phone, your keys and your sanity at every stop for the next fifteen minutes. You want one with a little bit of a base so it’s relaxed but not a scrap of fabric that folds in on itself at the first sign of an item inside like some sad deflated cream sack.
Go leather rather than suede if you can for an office bag. Suede will pick up a wet pavement in two..SECONDS and believe me when I say you’ll realise that when you’ve walked into a meeting and it’s the one day you’ve skipped wear/throwing on trousers instead of doing your jeans justice. Black lowers the stakes completely really, it goes under a coat, over a blazer, with navy, with camel, with whatever you grabbed off the back of the seat on your way out at 7am and didn’t really look at properly.
Style wise it works best if it sits slightly off your body, on your shoulder or crossbody rather than clutched in both hands like prey. It looks sharp with tailoring and a structured coat, a plain jumper, anything really with a defined line as the bag itself provides the softer rounded contrast. It’s great for client meetings, it’s great for the school run that inevitably turns into straight into a nine o’clock, it’s great for that in-between bit where you’ve finished work but don’t want to seem like you’re heading straight home either. Grab drinks, people. Throw it over your should, what’s worse they can see your entire suitcase of office supplies or they can’t?
And the drawstring top? The one concession I will gladly make to festival fashion. Grab and go, no messing about with bags of mini zips that always get stuck. Trust me, it’s vital when you’rerunning out the door at 8.52am.
