I spent a solid three years thinking blue was a “safe” holiday colour and then bought a cobalt dress in 2019 that made me look like I was cosplaying a Wedgwood teapot in Ibiza airport departures. So let us be clear: not all blue is equal, and this is the bit that actually matters when you are choosing one for a beach holiday. You want a blue that has some warmth folding through it, a denim wash, a faded cornflower, a proper deep indigo, rather than anything that reads as pure and flat under strong sun, because harsh light does something unkind to a cold true blue and turns the whole thing a bit clinical, a bit hospital curtain.
What I actually love about a good blue beach dress is that it does the work a swimsuit alone can’t. Something loose through the body, in a fabric that has a bit of texture or crinkle to it so it does not cling the second you sweat, which you will, because you are on a beach. Cotton and linen blends are the ones that survive an entire day, a boat, a lunch that runs three hours, and still look deliberate rather than slept in.

Where it earns its place is anywhere the day has no firm plan. Beach to bar, airport to hotel pool, a boat trip that becomes dinner. It should survive all of that without you once thinking about it, which, honestly, is the only real test a holiday dress needs to pass.
