The Perfect Blue Jumper For Layering This Season

I spent about three years believing blue jumpers were a safe, boring choice, the sort of thing you buy when you can’t be bothered to have an opinion. I was wrong, and I’d like to formally apologise to blue, because a properly chosen blue does more work in a layering system than black ever will. Black flattens everything around it. Blue actually talks to the other colours near your face, warms up grey, calms down white, makes denim look intentional instead of accidental.

What makes a good one for layering isn’t really about the blue at all, it’s about the shape underneath the shape. You want something with a bit of room at the shoulder and a hem that isn’t fighting whatever’s going over or under it.

Fine gauge knits are brilliant for sliding under a shirt collar or a blazer without adding bulk at the wrist, while a slightly heavier rib holds its own as the middle layer under a coat without collapsing into nothing.

The mistake I made for years was buying jumpers a size too neat, because they looked better on the hanger, then discovering they had precisely zero room to do the actual job of layering, which is holding other things.

Styling wise, this is where blue earns its keep. Under a tan or camel coat it goes properly rich, not fighting the coat, just sitting there looking expensive. Over a white shirt with the collar pulled out, it does that slightly academic, slightly smug thing that reads as effort without anyone being able to point to why. With grey trousers it’s borderline foolproof. With denim, obviously, it’s the whole point, though nobody needs telling that twice.

Occasion wise, a good blue jumper for layering is doing the school run, the client meeting, the pub after both, and the train journey between all three, without you having to think about it once you’re dressed. It’s not a going out piece and it’s not trying to be, it’s the thing that makes everything either side of it look like it was considered rather than assembled in the dark, which, on some mornings, it genuinely was.
