I thought beige was the colour of surrender for around three years. Then I borrowed one for the wedding that I literally had one smart option to wear left for. I got asked where it was from so many times that day I had to stop and seriously reassess. It turned out I was wrong, and I apologise for saying that.
A versatile beige shirt dress is a workhorse for this exact reason, it can make you look put together with far less effort than most other colours. It’s a simple style so the shirt itself has to be just right; opt for a shirt with a warmer beige with a hint of gold through it rather than flat, chalky beige that sucks the life out of you. It should have a well-constructed collar that stays put rather than diving into your neck when you lean forwards, all the buttons should go up to the top rather than halfway and making you second guess yourself and worst of all it should be made from a heavyweight fabric that doesn’t crease as soon as you sit on the train.
The cheaper the shirt dress the more it creases like a wet fish. And you don’t want to look like that, trust me, I learned that lesson years ago.
When it comes to styling this baby all I’m going to say is YES. Yes to bright sneakers to make it look like you have somewhere to go. Yes to boots and a jacket to take you into the evening without any fuss. And yes to gold jewellery. Gold and beige together is just.. perfection, you know? I can’t put my finger on it but if you disagree make sure to let me fight you about it.
Finally, where can I wear it? Well my friend, wherever you want. Work? Hell yeah it’s going to work. It instantly looks like you made an effort without shouting too loud. Lunch that could turn into night time drinks? Yeah, it’ll work for that too. Throw it on for a wedding where you don’t want to upstage the bride but still wake up dead. Or frankly, on a day where you just don’t have it in you to care; it’s the one thing you can throw on and walk out the house knowing you didn’t under-or-over dress yourself.
