I used to think beige was the colour equivalent of a shrug. Fine, inoffensive, the sort of thing you wear when you can’t be bothered to have an opinion about your outfit. A wrap skirt in beige seemed like doubling down on being forgettable. I was wrong, and I’m happy to say so now that I own more of them than I’ll admit to my sister, who took one look at my drying rack and said “that’s the third one this year, isn’t it.”

What makes a beige wrap skirt worth having is nothing to do with the colour being safe. It’s about the fabric doing the work that the colour can’t. A flimsy one clings, creases in a way that reads as scruffy rather than lived in, and goes slightly translucent under office lighting in a way nobody needs to discover at their desk.

A good one has proper weight to it, a drape that moves when you walk rather than swishing about like a tablecloth, and a tie or button placement that stays put through a full day without you having to reknot it in a toilet cubicle at 3pm.

Styling one is where beige stops being boring. Pair it with anything that has actual texture or colour, a chunky knit, a bright silk cami, tall boots in a proper contrast tone, because beige on beige on beige is the one combination that genuinely does look like you’ve given up.

It works brilliantly under a blazer for something that needs to look considered without trying too hard, and just as well with a plain white tee and trainers for the days you want to look put together while doing absolutely nothing that requires effort.

Occasion wise, this is the skirt for the in between moments. Not a big event, not loungewear, but everything in the middle: a work lunch, a gallery wander, a wedding guest outfit that needs one grown up piece to anchor it. It photographs well, travels well folded in a case, and somehow always looks more expensive than it was, which is the only kind of beige I’m interested in defending.
