The Best Yellow Tank Tops

Yellow is a colour that instantly shows up a poor fabric choice, so good tank tops often fall into one of two camps; a thicker cotton jersey, or a rib knit with actual substance. Thin, semi opaque jersey looks dingy in bright yellow regardless of lighting, while a heavier knit maintains its colour more evenly and flows rather than sticks to your body. Look for thicker rib, or a finely grained compact cotton to keep the colour vibrant rather than faded, and a neckline and armhole that skim rather than tug across your bust or bump out at the sides.

It’s also important to pay attention to shade. Yellow with orange undertones or a golden brightness will suit more complexions than a lemon or neon version, which can work well but feels like you need to own it and keep the rest of your outfit minimal. Yellow that leans more towards mustard will almost act like a neutral, pairing effortlessly with denim, khaki and white tones. Pure yellows want to be the sole statement piece in your outfit.

Contrast and simplicity elsewhere is key when styling one well. Both light washes and darker jeans work, but the cut of your jean can do more for your outfit than you’d think; straight or baggy jeans offset the form fitting top and keep your whole look from slipping into jeans and a tank territory. Pairing your yellow tank top with smarter trousers in cream, blue or black gives you an easy work lunch or office option that lets you wear colour.

As far as layering goes, throwing a blazer or button up shirt over it is where yellow truly shines; a peek of bright yellow at your neck or cuffs stands out more than if you wore it from head to toe.

This is technically a spring/summer piece, comfortable in the warmer months when you can get away with leaving the house without a jacket. Under a button up shirt and jeans it’s ideal for daytime, while teaming it with smart shorts or a skirt in the evening elevates it. Layering under dungarees, or a slip dress is perfect for those who like the colour but don’t want to fully commit. Always go for ones that you could technically wear on their own because yellow tops with structure look and photograph far more luxe than their low prices suggest.
