Yellow satin skirts shouldn’t work, but the best ones really do. Colour does the work that a print or embellishment does in other fabrics so you want the rest of it to be as low maintenance as possible: a neat waistband, a hang that looks fluid instead of clingy, and a weight of satin that’s substantial enough to hold its shape (and not crease) when you’re sat at a desk for eight hours. Cheap satin is unbearable because it grabs every bit of static electricity and sticks to you where it shouldn’t. Look for ones with a little body to them – enough so that when you move your skirt flows like one cohesive piece of fabric as opposed to a pile of messy satin – and in a yellow that leans just slightly mustard-y or golden as opposed to pure lemon, which will always scream careless in office lighting.
Length and cut are more important in satin than any other kind of skirt, mostly because satin by it’s very nature demands attention.
Your midi should fall just below the knee and feel either straight or gently pencil shaped. It should feel sharp and intentional.
Too flirty or too bias cut and you’ll risk looking like you accidentally wandered into a board meeting in your eveningwear. Satin is tricky in the work environment for that very reason, so your styling should work to tone down the shine rather than fight against it. Tuck a crisp white shirt into a fine merino knit or let it ride over the waistband of a tailored trousers and you’re instantly giving that skirt somewhere serious to rest. Throw a structured blazer – think navy, charcoal or black – over your shoulders and you have a look that feels ten times more daywear than anything else in your closet.
Keep your jewellery simple and remember that letting your skirt make one loud statement lets the rest of your outfit reap the benefits. Shoes should also be simple: a pointed flat, a low loafer or slim heel will always be more on-point than something shiny or too-feminine. Heels and metallics are party, not desk.
Yellow satin shines (literally) during the inbetween moments. Client meetings. The after work dinner you take RIGHT after leaving the office. Any day where wearing a basic trousers suit just feels like you’re not trying hard enough, even though you already made it to the office wearing entirely sane and decent clothing. Satin skirts just photograph so well in office lighting. They don’t lose their shape throughout the day and they really do add a focal point to your work wardrobe without trying too hard.
