Claire’s Pick of the Best Beige Midi Skirts

I spent years avoiding beige because I thought it was boring. Safe choice. Boring. Beige gave off strong blending-in-with-the-furniture vibes. I was wrong and I mean that genuinely because, done right, beige midi skirts have a place in your wardrobe that no other neutral can quite fill. They feel considered rather than safe, and on your skin they do something lovely that black just doesn’t.

It’s all in the fabric. A nice skirt can sing but for these skirts, it’s the fabric doing the talking, not the colour. Stiffer cottons and linen blends keep their shape and give you an adorable twirl as you walk but if it’s got any satin or ‘slip’ to it at all, it’ll drape completely differently and look a whole lot dressier – ideal for evening.

Flat, chalky fabric that sticks to your thighs after sitting down for half an hour is the worst. Ask me how I know this, we’ll just say that me and my friend Priya are never eating lunch together again after she got up from our table and had to live with literal creases from the chair across her skirt for the rest of the afternoon. So you know the drill, check the fabric first and THEN check the length.

Contrast for your top half. Beige wants white shirt, not beige cardigan. If you’re worried about chilly legs, throw on a pair of tights – but stick to opaque black or navy, no skins, they just look wrong. Dress it down with a white shirt, tucked in, sleeves rolled up and you’re looking chic AF and didn’t even try too hard. Pair it with a slouchy knit in a dark colour and you can wear it all autumn. Gold jewellery with a heeled sandal instead of flats for evening and suddenly it’s a whole new outfit but you haven’t changed anything except your shoes.

Where this actually shines is weddings too formal for denim and too casual for a mini, lunches with clients where business casual is safer than casual, and those days where you still want to leave the house feeling somewhat human. It’s the skirt that’ll photograph well in quirky lighting. It’s going to take you from office to dinner with one shoe swap, and it won’theckyou out from the back of your wardrobe because it wants more attention. Thewhole thing.
