The Beige Midi Dresses We Keep Coming Back To

For roughly three years, I was certain beige was the colour of defeat. A beige that whispered “I give up trying”. If beige colours looked like hospital waiting rooms to me, it’s no wonder I wasn’t rushing out to dress my body in them. My friend Priya pulled me up on it once at a barbecue. “You look like a nice envelope” she said, and tbh fair.
But beige, I was wrong about you. Let me address you directly: sorry beige, you’re not the problem, I just didn’t know what I was doing with you. A good beige midi dress isn’t boring or safe. It’s letting the colour do the subtle work while the shape and the fabric make all the statements. The good ones also have a bit of drape to them; something that flows as you walk, rather than hangs there stiff as cardboard. And the beige itself has got some warmth in it, not “ooh look, here comes famine” beige but oatmeal or caramel or rich browns. Beige that actually looks good on you.

There’s a trick to pulling off stuff in this colour palette. Beige wants to feel like a background colour, when really you should be treating it as the main event.
So throw texture and contrast somewhere else instead of attempting to channel fail-season of Gogglebox with more neutrals.
Gold jewellery always does beige something wonderful, same with a tan or burgundy bag. Throw on a bright shoe; a red or a cobalt works wonders to stop the whole thing Read -ery-ing into “I am now off to open a fete.” Throw a cardigan on top in an actual colour. Boots for Autumn, sandals for summer, both will work, which is more than I can say for most dresses I own. You get me? Texture elsewhere. It’s magic.

Speaking of occasions. This is your go to dress when you just can’t be fucked deciding what to wear but still need to look like you made an effort. Lunch with clients who want to talk to you about things. Weddings where you don’t want to match the decor too heavily (don’t ask how I know this, wear red to a wedding, never speak of it again). Catching someone’s parents for the first time on a Sunday. They’ll also photograph well for Instagram without looking like you’re trying to look like they’ll photograph well on Instagram. Trust me, it matters more than you think.

I own four now. Four beige midi dresses. I swore I’d never buy beige again and now I own four and EACH OF THEM get more wear than things I bought when I was convinced they’d make me more exciting.
