For years I thought beige was the colour equivalent of saying “no worries either way” when someone asks you what you want for dinner. Cosmetics display models in department stores: fine. Inoffensive: nothing. Takes no opinion because it literally has no opinion whatsoever about what you pair it with. My friend Priya said once about a skirt I owned in 2019 “that’s a very apologetic skirt” and fair, beige , it was .
I was wrong. Dammit I was wrong about you and I need to say that properly looking at beige in the eye:
I WAS WRONG ABOUT YOU BEIGE, AND I’M SORRY IT TOOK ME TEN YEARS TO FIGURE THAT OUT.
What makes a beige skirt work is what makes it fail. There’s no colour to amplify or speak louder than everything else, so fit and fabric have to do all the heavy lifting. It needs to have some proper structure. Something with a bit of heft to it so it doesn’t cling to your legs/crease when you sit down on the bus. Something that knows what it wants to be, whether that’s tailored and midi with a bit of sway or something looser than that but still skirt shaped rather than just hangs off you. Skirts that don’t do that look like they gave up about 30% into the design process and you end up looking like you’re off to reopen a village fete that got rained on. Ask me how I know.
My styling tip, that no one talks about is that beige always wants to be contrast. If you wear head to toe neutral on a bad day it screams “I got dressed in the dark and gave up.” Pair it with something that has ACTUAL colour or texture in it. A statement knit. A thigh skimming boot that’s actual black. A bag with some shine to it. Bam. That skirt now looks like you put some effort in rather than accepted your legs looked the same shade as your top this afternoon. It also does something magical with whites and creams that black just doesn’t want to. It softens everything it touches. Less severe. That’s why it has a place at day time functions. Breakfast meetings. Gallery trips. The kind of office where nobody cares if your trousers match your blazer. On all accounts.
It’s also actually really, really good for that in between weather. You know what I’m talking about, it’s too cold for bare legs but not cold enough for jumper season. Pop tights underneath it. Boots. Throw on a jacket you can take off. It instantly looks like you put some thought in without trying too hard. It’s never a statement piece. It’s the thing that makes everything else you’re wearing look twice as expensive.
