Buy a coat that has some substance to its weight and pile. Run your hand over the surface; it should spring back against your fingers instead of flattening down, and the fleece should have depth to it, rather than feeling thin and like it only gives the appearance of warmth. The ones that feel the best are cut with a little structure under all that fluff, have a nice shoulder line, a collar that stands up properly from the neck, and sleeves that are roomy enough to layer a jumper underneath without straining at the seams. It can be all too easy for the jacket maker to let the fabric do all the heavy lifting and pay little attention to the shape underneath, and this is where you end up with a coat that looks fantastic on a rail but lives nowhere near as big on a person.

Think carefully about colour. While I love a beige trench as much as the next gal, brown and black coats can be harder work but so worth the effort.

The milky hues become popular for a reason; they fall close to your skin tone and generally look flattering on most, but a rich brown or dramatic black offers high contrast and won’t have everyone else reaching for their camera when you’re wearing the same coat.
Stay away from really bold colours or anything pure white unless you’re happy to wipe your hands after handling it every time you wear it; teddy shines quite literally.

Once you’ve invested in one it’s tempting to match with similarly fluffy materials, but styling your teddycoat is more about contrasts than complementing fabrics.

It does so much visual heavy lifting that the rest of your outfit should take a step back. That means slim fitting trousers or plain jeans, rather than another wild pattern or fussy texture fighting for attention. It looks wonderful knotted over jumpers, thrown over a simple dress on those in-between days and can handle everything from a chunky knit boot to a white sneaker. You’ll lose any jewellery you wear against that surface so leave the statement necklaces and bold rings for elsewhere, and finish your look with a scarfy scarf or a sturdy shoulder bag instead.

As for when, this isn’t a coat you dress up for but it’s perfect for those mornings that need a little coat but not a lot of fuss. It’s ideal for school runs, weekend markets, the commute that starts off grim and ends with you somewhere fun, or any other day that’s too chilly to ignore but doesn’t warrant heavy tailoring. Where it really excels is that horrible period between coats and jackets; it can keep you plenty warm without feeling bulky or formal. Get it oversized rather than tailored; you’ll thank yourself when you can fit multiple layers underneath for the few months of the year that actually call for it.
