I spent years insisting that black mules were a “nearly shoe”, the thing you wear when you can’t be bothered with a proper shoe. Bare ankle with a cropped trouser or a straight leg turned up once, and suddenly a work outfit looks like you thought about it rather than just got dressed. With a midi skirt and a substantial coat they do the thing trainers can’t, which is look like you’re going somewhere rather than just leaving the house. Over a sheer sock with a slip dress for the kind of evening that starts at six and you’re not sure when it ends. And honestly, with jeans and nothing else remarkable happening, they’re doing more work than they get credit for.
Occasion wise they’re not trying to be the statement, and that’s exactly the appeal. Office days, dinners you didn’t plan an outfit for, the wedding guest look that needs a break from heels by nine, the school run that becomes lunch that becomes a proper afternoon. They’re the shoe you reach for when you want to look sorted without anyone clocking that you tried.
