I used to think sequin skirts were a one occasion a year purchase, wheeled out for a Christmas party and then shoved to the back of the wardrobe until next December. What makes a good one comes down to the sequins themselves, oddly enough. Cheap ones sit flat and plasticky and catch on tights the second you sit down. The good ones have a bit of weight, a slight give to the fabric underneath, and they move when you walk instead of just sitting there looking shiny. Hold it up and check the lining too, a proper lining means it doesn’t cling to everything and stops you doing that awkward tug at the hem all evening.
Styling one is genuinely less complicated than people make it. The instinct is to match the drama, but a plain jumper or a simple fitted tee does more for it than anything sequinned or silky on top. A chunky knit tucked in, a crisp white shirt half tucked, even an old band tee if you’re going for that off duty thing, they all work because the skirt’s already doing the talking. Trainers take it properly casual for daytime, which took me years to trust, and boots or heels swing it back to evening without any real effort.
Occasion wise, it’s obviously built for the party season stretch, the work do, the big family dinner where someone’s got engaged and you need to look like you tried. But I’d argue its best use is on the nights that don’t have a name, the ordinary Tuesday that needed lifting, the dinner that was meant to be quick and turned into something else. A black sequin skirt reads as a decision, not a costume, and that’s the whole point. Wear it properly, not just when there’s an invitation telling you to.
