The Best Brown Blouses

I spent years thinking brown was the colour you wore when you’d given up. Beige’s moody cousin, the one you reach for at 7am when black felt too try hard and everything else felt too try hard in the other direction. I was wrong, and I’ll say that properly, out loud, brown blouse, I’m sorry, you were never the problem, my chestnut polyester one from about 2014 was the problem.

A good brown blouse does something navy can’t and black definitely can’t, it sits next to your skin like it’s supposed to be there. Chocolate, tobacco, that deep coffee shade that looks almost black until it catches the light, they all read as warm rather than flat, which is why they work against most skin tones in a way that surprised me the first time someone actually said so out loud in a fitting room. My colleague Priya took one look at me in a rust toned silk one and said “that’s doing more for your face than your actual concealer”, which is the kind of backhanded compliment I now live for.

The fabric matters more than the colour here.

Silk or a proper silk blend catches light and stops brown looking like a school uniform. A crisp cotton does the opposite job well, structured, a bit no nonsense, good under a blazer for anything that requires you to look like you’ve read the agenda in advance.

Styling wise, brown wants texture around it, not competition. Cream trousers, a camel coat, gold jewellery rather than silver, all of it leans into the warmth instead of fighting it. Denim works too, and works harder than you’d think, a dark brown blouse tucked into straight leg jeans looks deliberate in a way that took me an embarrassingly long time to work out on purpose rather than by accident on a Tuesday.

Occasion wise it’s quietly the hardest working piece on the rail. Client meetings, an autumn wedding where you can’t face florals again, dinner somewhere with candles where black feels like you’re attending a wake. It doesn’t announce itself, which is exactly the point, and exactly why I now own more of them than I’m willing to count out loud.
