I spent about four years thinking a black shirt was a black shirt, the same way I thought all white t-shirts were the same until one went translucent under office lighting and a colleague called Priya told me, kindly but firmly, that she could see my bra. Black shirts don’t do that to you, which is sort of the whole point, but they’ll punish you in other ways if you buy the wrong one. The thin, slightly see-through version that pulls across the back when you reach for something. The one with a collar so stiff it stands up on one side like it’s had an idea. I’ve owned both. I’m not proud of either.
A proper black shirt top earns its place by doing the boring things brilliantly. The fabric should have actual weight to it, enough that it drapes rather than clings, enough that you can wear it with nothing underneath and not spend the day adjusting. The buttons matter more than anyone tells you, cheap ones catch on everything and pop at the worst moment, always the worst moment. And the cut needs a point of view, whether that’s a proper boxy shoulder or a fit that nips in, because a black shirt with no shape is just fabric you’re wearing at people.
Styling one is where the fun starts. Tucked into tailored trousers with the top two buttons undone, it does serious meeting energy without trying.
Knotted at the waist over denim, it’s doing something else entirely, and both are correct. Worn open over a plain top as a sort of soft jacket, it earns its keep in that horrible in between weather we get for about eight months of the year. Sleeves rolled, tucked into a leather skirt, gold jewellery, done, that’s a whole evening sorted with almost no effort, which is the actual dream.
Where it properly shines is anywhere you can’t quite decide what the dress code is. Dinner that might turn into drinks. A work thing that isn’t quite a work thing. The wedding guest outfit you build when you refuse to buy another floral dress. It says you thought about it without saying you spent all morning on it, and that’s the whole trick.
