I bought a beige coat in 2019 that made me look like I was trying to audition for The Archers as an estate agent commissioned by a publisher to populate their weekend magazines. Too stiff, too yellow, too much shoulder padding on someone who has literally never once had to look powerful at 8.40am on a Tuesday. I wore it four times then banished it to the back of the cupboard to be smug and useless for two years. So fair enough. I’m met with scepticism when I say it. Beige is the sort of colour that publicly humiliates you for a bad decision in a way that black never will.
But when you get the right one it is genuinely the hardest working thing you can throw over an office outfit, because it does what black just can’t. It looks deliberate, rather than defensive.
It needs to fit well. A good beige coat isn’t cream. It isn’t camel really. It sits that zone between oatmeal and biscuit that reads considered rather than, “Oh god what am I wearing I didn’t want to think about it.” The fabric needs body. It should have a bit of weight and drape to it. Nothing too papery. Nothing that will crease as soon as you sit down for a two hour meeting that could have been an email. Something wool or a wool blend. It should hang well, have a proper collar that doesn’t flap about on the walk down from the station.
It’s honestly so easy to wear once you find the right one. Which pisses me off after how much time I spent avoiding the colour entirely. Works on trousers and a jumper without trying too hard. Does the same job over a shirt and skirt. Makes trainers feel like a choice, not a compromise. Contrasting layers underneath is key – beige on beige on beige just merges into some sort of fog until someone at a meeting asks if you’re ok. Throw some navy, black, a ‘proper’ burgundy on underneath and it sharpens it up without battling it.
Occasion wise it’s everything. Built for that weird stretch of life that no one seems to talk about; when you’ve left the house early enough to need clothes but haven’t quite reached ‘office hours.’ The client meeting you’ve got straight after dropping your kids at school. The train journey to a conference.
That lunch you haven’t planned for but cannot bear the thought of turning up to looking like you slept on the sofa. Someone once described mine as “smart in a quiet way.” If you’re describing my coat that’s the only compliment you’ll ever hear me use. It’s not a coat to brag with. It’s a coat that means you’ll never have to explain yourself before 9am.
