I tricked myself into thinking I hated barrel leg jeans for nearly three years. Believed they were invented with one purpose in mind; to make otherwise fabulous individuals think they’ve accidentally shrunk their formerly nice straight leg jeans. Shouted this exact theory at my sister Priya during a barbecue aged 20 in 2022 and then embarrassingly agreed with her friend when she insisted I try a pair eighteen months later after getting bored of how I looked in a straight leg. I promptly DM’ed Priya to say I was sorry after positive alterations. She replied with “told you” and nothing else which I thought was only polite of her.
So where do barrel- leg jeans trump all other cuts out there and subsequently sell me on them? Shape. They create a shape a standard straight leg can’t for me. That slight curve from knee to hem allows for enough room that you don’t feel like you need to suck your top half into them to keep them up, but you don’t get any of the ‘youforgot to iron them’ shapelessness of a baggier cut.
They skim beautifully over the hip, before slimming down ever so slightly at the thigh, before giving enough at the calf to swing as you walk.
This shape needs a good heavyweight denim with structure to it in order for the curve to work rather than just droop down into a sad unstable pile around your ankles by lunchtime.
This is where I messed up badly when I first bought a pair that were so light they may as well not have existed. Not only did they cling to every ounce of my thigh in completely unflattering ways, but they also went from cute nautically inspired jeans to flat board with no ounce of shape by the time I’d walked to the tube. Please learn from my mistakes and buy a pair in a heavy denim this time.
Crop the length JUST above your ankle and team with a bulky loafer or trainer and you’re ready to take on the world and get way too many compliments.
I literally mean it. A work colleague sidled up to me whilst I was presenting to ask me where I got them from. I’ve never been asked that question in my decade of jean buying before and since that day.
They’re also one of the loosest cuts that will actually skim your figure instead of just ‘making you look cosy’. Skinny top, wide bottom will flatter with almost everything. Throw over a tight sweater, shirt you’ve tucked into properly, hell even a blazer if you’re going for I tried looks but didn’t try vibes. They’re genuinely the best if you’re after a jean you can live in; school run, Sunday lunch, hungover noonish drinks. You name it. After years of jean buys that only ever suited one style or mood, that’s what sold it to me. They’re worth the investment. Trust.
