The Perfect Beige Cropped Top For A Night Out

Beige has been unfairly marked as boring lazy-girl paint because you grabbed it when you didn’t want to think about what to wear. But a beige crop top is one of the smarter things you can wear when you’re dressing for drinks. It’s close to your skin tone without mimicking it, which allows it to do what most bold colours can’t; allow jewellery, texture and shape to shine rather than the colour itself. Nothing printed or embellished will ever scream ‘I spent money on this!’ like a plain beige crop top will, so focus on the fabric and fit instead. Look for something that holds its shape (nothing too chiffony), maybe a rib knit that clings softly rather than pulls in all the right places, or a satin that reflects light without looking overly slippery or cheap. The actual crop is also more important than people realise. Too high and it just looks like you forgot to clean your jeans before wearing them. Anything that hits just above your natural waist looks intentional rather than revealing.

Of course, how you wear it is where the fun comes in.

High-waisted trousers or a smart skirt compliments that strip of waist without turning your whole outfit into a happy meal commercial, and a thrown-on blazer jacket, kept open instead of buttoned up adds something just STRUCTURED enough that you don’t look like you threw on a crop top and called it a day. Pair it with jeans too, ideally a darker pair with a slouchy shape that complements the fitted nature of your top. Gold jewellery, some nice heels and something sparkly at the ear will do more for your outfit than another layer would. Think texture. A sleek, beige top paired with leather, sequins or wool crepe will keep your outfit from looking two dimensional or, well, beige on beige.

Don’t wear this to work, or to run errands, it’s just not that top. Save it for late night dinners, birthdays or first dates when you want to look like you made an effort but not like you actually put in effort, and those nights when the lighting is flattering and you know you’ll be leaning more than sitting. It’s your ‘do nothing but look good’ top, and everything else should be built around it.
