Burgundy does something a black or navy jacket simply cannot in an office setting: it reads as considered rather than default. The colour has enough depth to behave like a neutral, sitting comfortably next to grey trousers or a charcoal skirt, yet it carries warmth that makes the whole face look less severe under fluorescent lighting. A good one reads as a genuine wine or oxblood tone rather than a dusty pink-brown, and that depth of colour usually signals a decent dye and a fabric with enough body to hold it.
Construction matters more here than in almost any other jacket colour, because burgundy shows every flaw in a drape. The ones that earn their place have structured shoulders without excessive padding, a defined waist seam, and a length that stops at or just below the hip rather than skimming mid thigh, which tends to shorten the leg line in a way that undermines the whole point of tailoring. Fabric should have some substance, a wool blend or a slightly textured twill that keeps its shape through a full day of sitting, reaching and shrugging on and off at a desk, rather than a flat, shiny synthetic that creases the moment it meets a chair back.

Styling it well is largely about resisting the urge to match it too closely. Cream, camel and soft grey give the colour room to be the statement, while a crisp white shirt underneath keeps the whole look sharp rather than heavy. Black works too, but only with contrast elsewhere, a pale trouser or a lighter shoe, so the outfit doesn’t tip into looking like mourning wear. Denim, ideally a dark, straight cut, brings it down a register for days that move between meetings and errands without losing the tailoring.

Occasion wise, this is the jacket for the parts of working life that ask for a bit more presence: presentations, client meetings, interviews, any day where the outfit needs to say something before a word is spoken. It also does well at the edges of the working week, worn over a slip dress for an evening that starts at the office and doesn’t end there. What it isn’t is a jacket that wants to disappear into the background, and that’s precisely its use. Choose it for the days you want to be remembered as put together, not merely present.
