The wrap jumpsuit works because it solves the dilemma that most one piece dressing presents; they eliminate any definition at the waist. Adding a tie or button fastening at the front does what a seam alone cannot do; it pulls everything in right at the smallest part of your shape and lets the rest of the silhouette do whatever it wants. Trust me, if you’ve ever worn a boxy jumpsuit you’ll know the difference it makes instantly. It gives you shape with zero darts involved, which is why it flatters so many body types and why it hasn’t fallen in and out of favour like many ‘one season’ styles do.
Fabric choice is everything with a wrap jumpsuit. It needs enough fluidity to wrap and fall beautifully without gaping or creasing. Think less stiff cotton and more dressy fabrics. If you’ve got something stiff you’ll just end up fighting the silhouette rather than complimenting it.
Fabrics that work best are viscose, crepe, satin backed jersey and fluid twill. They’ll naturally fold at the waist creating soft pleats and skim through the hip rather than cling. Ensure the wrap point hits your natural waist too, not above it and finally look for an internal tie or popper on the underside of the wrap. Any jumpsuit that only ties closed at the front won’t survive a day without loosening at some point.
A wrap jumpsuit doesn’t need much styling-wise, in fact it’s less about adding and more about where you keep things minimal. A wide leg style is best with a heel to elongate the leg line, whereas a slightly cropped or narrowed leg can handle a flat sandal or loafer without looking stubbed. Throw a blazer over the top for an easy work style, or keep shoulders bare with a fine gold chain to take it into the evening. Jewellery and outerwear can be minimal because the jumpsuit itself creates your shape. Wrap jumpsuits also photograph really well which is another reason they never go out of style.
I wear mine for literally everything. It’s my go to ‘dress it up but not too much’ option. Think: garden parties, long lunches, catching up over drinks or anywhere that needs something a bit more polished than a dress but with zero hassle of blazers and tucked in shirts. It also travels seriously well since you don’t have to worry about wrinkling like you do with a blouse and trousers.
