I avoided beige for years because I thought it would wash me out and make me look like I'd forgotten to get dressed properly. What changed was trying on a slip dress in a changing room with terrible lighting, expecting to look ill, and instead looking rested. That was it. I went home and thought about all the black dresses I owned that did the same job with none of the warmth.
The fit is where beige catches people out, because any shadow, pull or crease shows up far more than it would on navy or black. A dress that's slightly too tight across the stomach will tell on you in a way darker fabric simply hides. So go a size up if you're between sizes, and pay attention to lining. Cheap polyester with no lining clings and creases within an hour and shows every seam of your underwear, so check for a proper lining or at least a decent weight of fabric, something like a crepe or a viscose blend that has a bit of body to it rather than something thin and slippery. Linen beige is lovely for warm weather but creases the moment you sit down, so decide if that bothers you before you buy it. Watch the shade against your own skin too, there's a yellow beige and a pink beige and a grey beige, and the wrong one can make you look tired rather than rested, so try it in daylight if you possibly can rather than trusting the shop lighting.
Once you've got the shade right, it pairs with almost everything you already own without looking like you're trying too hard. Tan or brown leather, a denim jacket thrown over the top, gold jewellery rather than silver, all of it sits easily against beige because there's nothing in the colour fighting for attention. I wear mine with white trainers and a khaki jacket in spring and with boots and a wool coat in fallwhen it's gone cold, and it never looks like I've repeated an outfit even though structurally I have. It's also the one colour that makes block heels and simple sandals look more expensive than they were, because there's no clash to distract from the shape of the shoe. If you're starting with nothing in this colour, go for a midi in a slightly stiffer fabric, something with enough structure to hold its shape rather than drape and cling, because that's the version that forgives a bit of movement and still looks deliberate by the end of a long day.
It's not a dramatic colour and it was never going to be. That's rather the point of it.
